Evidence-backed informationEN 1/6 applicable sections · ZH 1/6 applicable sectionsUpdated Sep 3, 2026

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a group of Staphylococcus aureus strains resistant to β-lactam antibiotics, including methicillin, oxacillin, and cephalosporins [1]. MRSA features prominently in antibiotic-resistant epidemics and has historically been associated with hospitals and healthcare settings but has now emerged as a widespread cause of community infections [2]. Outbreaks of community-associated MRSA have been reported worldwide, and these strains are now epidemic in the United States [2]. This surveillance classification scope encompasses source-defined MRSA reports that may include infection or colonization and is not restricted to community-associated infection [3].

Surveillance entity definition

MRSA is a classification scope for source-defined MRSA surveillance reports that may include infection or colonization; it is not restricted to community-associated infection [3]. MRSA refers to strains of Staphylococcus aureus that have acquired resistance to β-lactam antibiotics through the mecA gene and its homologues, encoded on the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) [4][1].
