The study estimated antibody prevalence for bovine leukaemia virus and Coxiella burnetii in dairy cattle in Abu Dhabi Emirate and assessed whether positive serostatus for the two pathogens was associated.

This was a cross-sectional study using ELISA testing of serum samples and logistic regression to evaluate the relationship between the two serostatus measures.

Population and setting

The sample comprised 492 adult Holstein-Friesian cattle from three dairy herds in the Al Ain region of the United Arab Emirates.

Antibodies to bovine leukaemia virus and C. burnetii were detected in 47.0% and 49.4% of cattle, respectively, and 24.2% were positive for both. BLV-positive cattle had higher estimated odds of C. burnetii seropositivity, but the association was not statistically significant (OR 1.25, 95% CI 0.88-1.79; p = 0.2258).
