Mycoplasma pneumonia, also called Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia, is a bacterial pneumonia induced by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and represents a recognized cause of community-acquired pneumonia [1]. It is occasionally described as walking pneumonia [1].
Aperçu de la maladie
BactérienneMycoplasma pneumonia is a bacterial form of community-acquired pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, sometimes termed walking pneumonia [1]. It occurs more frequently in children than adults and is a common childhood respiratory pathogen [1][2]. Controlling transmission is challenging due to a multi-day presymptomatic infectious period and limited diagnostic and therapeutic tools [1].

The infection produces a range of respiratory manifestations including primary atypical pneumonia, tracheobronchitis, and upper respiratory tract disease, with tracheobronchitis the most common and primary atypical pneumonia among the most severe [1]. Symptomatic illness typically evolves over several days and may mimic other pneumonic conditions [1]. In children, prominent features include intermittent irritating cough with headache, fever, and muscle pain, and up to 18% of infected children require hospitalization [1][3]. Mild presentations involve sore throat, wheezing, cough, fever, headache, rhinitis, and myalgia [1].
Mycoplasma pneumonia shows greater prevalence among children than adults, with many adults remaining asymptomatic while children usually display symptoms [1]. Approximately 40% of community-acquired pneumonia cases are attributable to this pathogen, and children together with elderly individuals are the most susceptible groups [1]. Incidence is not strictly tied to season or geography, though infections appear somewhat more often in summer and fall when other respiratory pathogens decline, and epidemic cycling is linked to P1 adhesin subtype variation [1].
The bacterium spreads through respiratory droplets and aerosols from infected persons [1]. Limiting spread is difficult because individuals are infectious for several days before symptoms emerge [1].
Control is complicated by the long presymptomatic infectious period and inadequate diagnostic and treatment capacity, making cohorting of patients relatively ineffective [1]. The preferred strategy is to minimize caregiver–patient contact and restrict caregivers from moving across multiple hospital wards [1]. No protective vaccine is yet available, though development for children is considered needed to lower incidence [3].
