Toxic shock syndrome is an acute, multi-system, toxin-mediated disease representing the most fulminant expression of illness caused by toxin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes [1][2][3]. Bacterial superantigenic exotoxins drive unconventional lymphocyte activation and a cytokine avalanche that bypasses normal antigen processing, leading to rapid shock and organ dysfunction [1][2][3].
Aperçu de la maladie
BactérienneToxic shock syndrome is a rare, life-threatening, toxin-mediated illness most often caused by toxin-producing Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes [1][2][3]. It manifests acutely with multi-system involvement and carries substantial morbidity and mortality, yet is considered underdiagnosed among patients with staphylococcal or group A streptococcal infection who present with shock [1][2][3]. Scientific literature is limited largely to observational studies and case reports because of the disease's low incidence [1].

The syndrome is characterized by rapid shock, multiple organ failure, and potential death driven by superantigen-mediated immune activation [1][2][3]. Staphylococcal forms may be menstrual or nonmenstrual, whereas streptococcal toxic shock is frequently associated with severe group A streptococcal infection and often a necrotizing soft tissue infection [1]. Disseminated intravascular coagulation and tissue damage may arise from the cytokine cascade [2].
Toxic shock syndrome is a rare disease with low incidence that has been described principally through observational studies, clinical cases, and in vitro data [1].
