Research question

What evidence exists on climate-related drivers of cholera transmission, epidemiological patterns, and control strategies in Nigeria?

Study design

This was a scoping review using the Arksey and O’Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR guidance. The authors searched three databases and reference lists for studies published from January 2000 to November 2024, with independent screening by two reviewers and narrative synthesis.

Population and setting

The review covered studies examining climate–cholera relationships in Nigeria. Thirty-two studies met the inclusion criteria from 187 identified records.

Main findings

Rainfall variability was the most commonly examined climate factor, followed by temperature and flooding. Most included studies reported a positive association between heavy rainfall and cholera outbreaks, while temperature results varied; the rainy season was described as the period of highest reported risk, with peaks commonly occurring from June to August.
