Research question

The review assessed the efficacy of bedaquiline on treatment outcomes in patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Study design

This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of eight studies (two randomized controlled trials and six cohort studies) involving 21,836 subjects. Studies were included if participants received bedaquiline versus no bedaquiline. Quality was assessed using the Jadad scale for trials and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale for cohort studies.

Population and setting

The review included patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis, specifically those with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis eligible for WHO-recommended all-oral regimens.

Main findings

Bedaquiline treatment was associated with higher culture conversion rates (RR 1.272, 95% CI 1.165-1.389, P<0.001) and lower mortality (RR 0.734, 95% CI 0.618-0.872, P<0.001) compared with control. Treatment success was higher in the bedaquiline group (RR 1.197, 95% CI 1.110-1.290, P<0.001).
